Peach on Yogurt

peach
"An apple is an excellent thing -- until you have tried a peach."
-George du Maurier

Well, apples are apples and peaches are peaches. We might have  different preferences but yes, both are fruits we love. Peach used to be the favorite canned fruit back home (thanks to del Monte). Not knowing where to buy them fresh we settled for the preserved ones. It was my dad who taught me to do a milkshake simply by putting ice and milk. Prior, I always had it as is, as a "naked" fruit.

Now that I get peaches fresh from the market, I see to it that the kids have them as much as they have apples, grapes, nectarines and other fruits in season.

The stores offer yogurt already flavored. A wide selection with strawberry, cherry, blueberry and peach too but I would just buy a plain vanilla and put sliced peaches on top for a more peachy-feel. I recently bought an ice cream maker and peach would be my first experiment. :P

Fruit Smoothie

berries

Strawberries are in season again. Well, they never are out of season only at this time they are redder and sweeter. I got me a pack from the grocery last Friday and forgot about them when I came home. :D I planned to make something of a cake base with gelatine and strawberries on top but was too lazy that I ended up with this Smoothie.

Trouble was, I can't find a part of our blender when I was preparing so I had to improvise. ;) I don't have yoghurt  so i scratched it off. I put an overriped  banana in the fridge and used it as 'replacement' for ice cubes. I used a regular mixer and thank goodness the contents didn't get wild: thrown all-over the kitchen.

So voila! I therefore conclude that from strawberries and a frozen banana and some milk, you can make your own healthy smoothie in a few minutes. Remember smoothies are a great source of fiber and vitamin C and is a good antioxidant as well...

Note:

For a basic (and real) smoothie, use -
# 1/2 to 1 cup fruit
# 1 cup plain or fruit yogurt
# 1/2 cup fruit juice
# about 4 ice cubes
Combine all the ingredients in a blender. Process on high until the ice is completely crushed and the drink is smooth and creamy.

Ruby Tuesday - Strawberries

Strawberries!

"Strawberry" comes from the Old English word "streawberige." When I was a kid, I get to enjoy them only when someone comes back from Baguio, the city where strawberries grow abundantly because of the low temperature in the mountains. Most of the time, we'll only have bottled strawberry jam.

Now, my kids get to enjoy strawberries all year-round. Plain as this, with chocolate coating, or with banana and fine sugar.

A cup of strawberry (144 grams) contains approximately 45 calories (a 15 minute run on the treadmill and its gone) but strawberry is also listed as a negative calorie food, which means by eating a cup you lose 45 calories more. No need to run the mill. ;-)

Random stuff about (featured) fruits

heavy with vitaminC

I don't claim to be a nutrition expert but I 'm glad that those who are freely gives information about fruits. Let's see what the fruits in the photo above contain and let's learn some more health tips too.

-----

One orange supplies 116.2% of the daily value for vitamin C.

-----

Strawberries are a wholesome source for essential vitamins and minerals such as vitamin C, folate, fiber, potassium and antioxidants that help keep you and your family healthy. Just eight strawberries have more vitamin C than a medium orange. Strawberries are low in fat and calories, which makes them a great snack and they are also thought to be helpful in reducing the risk of certain types of cancer.

-----

Cantaloupes are fat and cholesterol free, contains very low sodium. Are high in vitamins A and C and also a good source of folate.

-----

The vitamin C content of many fruit is higher when it is slightly immature, and declines as the fruit hits peak ripeness. For example, the kiwifruit is an exceptionally rich source of vitamin C - a medium sized fruit has 74 mg, but a kiwifruit that has been coolstored for a while has a vitamin C content of 57 mgs. Still excellent, but less excellent.

-----

Lemons has very good amounts of copper, magnesium, manganese, iron, phosphorous, potassium and calcium are found in lemons. Small amounts of zinc and sodium can also be seen in lemons. Lemons contain excellent levels of vitamin c. It is also a good source of thiamin, vitamin c, vitamin b6, riboflavin and pantothenic acid. Lemon also contains traces of vitamin b2.
