Lasang Pinoy Sundays - Sip it Hot!

Umeshu or plum wine, can be taken after a full course meal (digestif) although it is also drank as aperetif on the rocks...This always gives me a feeling of comfort and removes the guilt of overindulging on rice and fatty food. :D It's supposed to aid digestion too!

Now that its winter, I prefer it a little hot, though when lukewarm, it would equally soothe down the throat and leaves a warmish feeling too.

Food Friday - Milkfish

Since milkfish has lots of tiny 'tinik' (bones), deboned (butterfly cut) is a great option to enjoy it. A little salt and pepper then crispy fried does the trick.

What I don't like in cooking it is the part where the fish should be flipped because the skin, on some occasion, sticks to the pan, or the stomach (which is my favorite part) gets left behind. Thank goodness I was finally able to buy this oval fish pan that I have been eyeing since last year, I always forget to go back to where I first saw it until it became available last week at the neighborhood shop.

Teflon made, this one is non-sticky and the fish fits perfectly without me having to worry about the tail!

Happy weekend foodies!

Lasang Pinoy Sundays - Leftovers

Having lived with Hubby's lola, I learned that she is one thrifty and resourceful cook, she would scavenge for leftovers (cooked) from the kitchen and make them into an all new dish, tasty and very different from what it was. :D In a way, its nice, she doesn't waste food but on the other hand, like hubby puts it...too much.

---

Today's theme is leftovers, so I looked at what we have in the fridge and I concocted my own okonomiyaki (Japanese pancake). Literally it means: to cook what you like, in my case I cooked anything I have. :D

I found a small container of mixed seafoods: shrimp, baby octopus and squid, had them thawed and boiled a little. I chopped some green onions, I used the batter of a ready to cook pancake! Works fine too as the mixture of flour, egg, cabbage and water. Have them all mixed and pan-grilled.

I then topped my easy morning breakfast meal with tonkatsu sauce, mayonnaise, katsuoboshi (fish flakes)...the black flakes you see on top are nori bits because I do not have aonori (seaweed flakes) that time. This was really a fun concoction, though the Japanese would say 'boroboro' to refer to tattered or broken stuff, this is the food version of that! So, tabemashou!

Food Friday - California Maki mit Lachs

I took an exam yesterday (for a German course) and went back today to get my results. On my way home, I passed by the Praterstern, took some photos, dropped an envelope at the post office and went to take some more shots. Since the Praterstern station is quite new (renovated and opened in 2006), there are a lot of new establishments worth visiting, one of which is the Ginza running Sushi restaurant.

They offer Asian buffet, running sushi and also coming fondue. I wasn't able to check the last two features of the restaurant as I was in a hurry to get home and pick up the kids. Take home is also an option, which I find really cheap. You get to fill a container pint and another half of it for only 4,80euros (6.45$). I filled one with shrimp tempura, and other deep-fried seafood while the other with bulgogi. (Tempura for the kids and bulgogi for hubby.)

I also took a box of 6-piece california maki (avocado, kani) topped with salmon slices and sesame seeds. The Chinese attendant was smiling while she handed me this box...as if telling me its good! It was really good and fresh although I would also enjoy it when coated with masago (caviar).

Next was this mini-box with 3 different sushi, salmon, tuna and butterfish plus 3 futo makis. I don't need to say, the photo speaks for itself. I gave this to a friend but I haven't heard from her yet.

All in all I paid short of 14euros...for a really tasty lunch...it was a nice experience, save for the cashier who would sometimes talk on the phone while customers wait, she also speaks out loud with her colleagues. :D

Anyway, I'd definitely come back to try their running sushi and coming fondue soon, this place is a good value for money!
